Lovely Victorian silverplate and mother of pearl sugar nips or tongs. Sugar has not always been free pouring granules, it used to arrive in the kitchen as a loaf or cone of sugar and could be quite hard, and the cook needed to break off pieces to use.
Perhaps that is why we say “one lump or two?” When we offer sugar to someone we have made tea or coffee for?
